A standoff guide is not an essential part of a typical plasma torch, however, the use of a standoff guide helps to maintain a stable arc length for a clean and precise cut. Using a standoff guide will also prolong the life of your plasma torch consumables as the arc is stable and there is far less heat transfer from contact on the cutting material. Standoff guide cutting is far more superior to drag cutting or contact cutting.
